How Summer Weather is Affecting Your Roof

by Chris Russell / Sunday, 17 July 2016 / Published in Uncategorized

This summer, you’re relying on the roof over your head to keep you cool and out of the sun. However, that same hot weather that you’re trying to get away from could be damaging your roof. Extreme weather conditions affect your shingles and roofing in different ways. While most roofs have an average lifespan of 15-20 years, the hot summer weather could speed that up a little bit. To avoid premature roof repair, be aware of how different climates could impact your roof. Then, take time to perform inspections and maintain your roof as needed to ensure that it stays in good condition all year long.

Heavy Rain

While your shingles are equipped to deal with rain, heavy water fall does more damage than you might expect. Torrential downpours can cause the granules of your shingles to lose their vital tenacity. When this happens, the shingles begin to deteriorate. A damaged shingle allows water to seep through its surface and cause leaks. It can also cause the wood underneath to rot. The flashing on your roof may also begin to rust if exposed to enough water, causing leaks. Rain and humidity can even cause moss and mold to grow if not examined frequently. If you notice that there is liquid seeping through your ceiling, chances are you’ve got a hole in your roof. Get it fixed before that heavy rainfall outside quickly becomes an inside problem.

Gusty Winds

Wind is perhaps the most detrimental weather condition to your roof. Strong winds can rip off shingles and tiles very easily. Usually these missing shingles go unnoticed until a rain comes in. Then, leaks happen and cause major issues. Wind also tends to blow all sorts of things onto your roof. Leaves can clog your drain pipes and, if the debris is large enough, can even put a hole in your roof. Strong gusts have enough power to blow branches and trees over. If the branch is large enough, structural damage could occur. At the first sign of missing or damaged shingles, call a repairman. This prevents further issues from happening.

Heat

Summers in the south are hot and sticky. But is that heat causing issues with your roof? Over time, shingles and other roofing materials can be damaged by extreme heat. While not as common, shingles may become warped or crack after years of time in the hot, hot sun.  If a crack occurs, it’s easier for water to seep through and cause even larger problems. The best way to prevent this type of roofing problem from happening is by examining your roof regularly. If you notice that a shingle or tile is damaged, replace it as quickly as possible.

Your roof should be sturdy, solid, and be able to stand up against summer weather. If it doesn’t, it’s time to call the professionals. Here at KTM Roofing Company, Inc., we know what harsh summer weather can do to your shingles. Whether you have questions about a missing shingle or need a roof repair, we are here to ensure that the roof over your head stays strong during even the hottest of summers.
