8 Ways to Maintain Your Roof This Summer

by Chris Russell / Monday, 06 June 2016 / Published in Uncategorized

’Tis the season for yard work. Now that the cold weather has passed and the sun is coming out, it’s time to bust out the rake, shovels, and lawnmower. While doing yard work should be high on your priority list, don’t forget about taking care of your roof. After a stormy winter, your shingles and gutters could be in need of some TLC. Whether you do the inspection yourself or hire roofers in Roswell to take a look, it’s important to make sure everything is in working order. Here are a few tips and tricks to keep the roof over your head in good condition this summer.

  1. Check your gutters and downspouts. Over time, leaves, debris, and dirt can all build up in your gutters and drainage pipes. If not cleared out, they could cause a blockage to occur. This can cause flooding and other issues.
  2. Clear the area behind your skylight. Normally, skylights tend to jut out a bit above your roof. This allows leaves and debris to build up behind them. If this debris is not removed, moisture can become trapped underneath and eventually lead to algae, mildew, and decay. Each season, remove any buildup to keep your roof in good condition
  3. Replace any damaged or missing shingles. It’s normal for your shingles to crack or become worn over time. If you notice any damage, simply remove and replace the affected shingle. If any are missing, be sure to replace them as soon as you can. This prevents any leaks or further damage from occurring.
  4. Take pictures. Each season when you get on top of your roof to take a look at things, take pictures of the different areas. Then compare your pictures from year to year. This helps ensure that there haven’t been any major changes since the last time you were up there.
  5. Act quickly if you find algae. If you find algae while clearing off your roof, it’s time to act fast as it can spread quickly. Call a roofing professional as soon as possible to avoid further problems.
  6. Check for critters. Raccoons, mice, rats, and squirrels all love to hide out in attics. Check your roofline for any holes that rodents could squeeze through and seal them up. If an infestation has happened, call a professional pest control company to help you get the problem under control.
  7. Examine your eaves and overhangs. Take a good look at all the areas of your home. If your overhangs or eaves have water stains, you could have a leaky roof. Having the leaks fixed during the summer ensures that once winter hits, you won’t be dealing with cold air and water seeping through your ceiling.
  8. Check sealants. While checking up on your roof, be sure to look at the sealants. If they aren’t in good shape, take the time to replace them. They help to keep your home warm and dry.

Taking care of your roof should be one of your top priorities this summer. If you notice any issues or leaks, calling professional roofers in Roswell should be your next course of action. These experts can examine and fix any issues that could compromise the integrity of your roof.
