We’ve been thinking a lot about Hurricane Sandy and the folks in the northeast over the last few weeks. Something that isn’t hitting the news too much yet, but will be in the near future is around storm chasers. We’ve had this problem in Georgia within the last few years around hail damage. Companies would come from out of town and try to scam homeowners. Click here to read more.
When looking to to hire a roofer, make sure you do your homework on verify that the person you are working with is reliable. Laws will vary in NJ and NY from GA, but some common red flags such as not having a business card, proof of insurance or accessible reviews online are simple checks a homeowner can perform.
It is important to mention that not all companies from out of town will be trying to defraud homeowners. In fact, many companies coming from out of town are doing a great service as the local industry cannot handle the increase in business. What we are advising is that homeowners think about it in more detail. Do your homework. Check both long term references (going back upwards of 365 days), in addition to more recent work that is local.

When you’re considering a new roof, there is alot to consider. KTM often recommends looking at the entire roof as a system and bundling projects to save overall cost. Considerations that homeowners often overlook when thinking of a roof installation, but are typically interested in, are additional insulation options, such as offered by KTM Energy Wise and guards over their gutters. These additional enhancements can be installed at the same time as your roof.
KTM Roofing is proud to offer Gutterglove Gutter Guard, including its Pro, Ultra and LeafBlaster line.

Happy Earth Day! Today is a great day to think about energy, conservation and how your home’s design can make an impact (not to mention, save you some $$$).
KTM has been focused on green roofing options for years. Green roofing can mean many things, to many people. To some, they may think of a flat roof with a mini-ecosystem growing on it, including grass and various forms of plant life. This is one type of environmentally friendly roofing that many can admire, even if their home’s peak roof is a candidate for it.
For most of KTM Roofing’s customers, they view green roofing and being environmentally friendly as another type of roofing. Consider these two variables:
- material selection
- longevity of the roof
Think of natural materials such as slate, tile or concrete. Today there are additional options available such as recycled plastic that perform well too. Some of these might be priced out of the average person’s range. One option that is available and becoming more popular is to increase the longevity of the roof through tile selection.
The pricing can make sense, especially if you plan to be in your home for a while. Consider this; a roof is typically expected to last 25-30 years. If you decide to sell around year 20 it is likely the potential buyer will view the roof as having a much depreciated value. Today, other options are available, even in the asphalt shingles that are most common on homes. While in the past, a 25 or 30 year roof was the norm, today, consumers can pick from roofs that are rated to last for 40 or even 50 years.
The price for these shingles will be more expensive, but will take alot longer to depreciate. They’ll also reduce the amount of waste needed to both clear away your old roof and manufacture the new roofing material since a 40 or 50 year roof is almost double the life span of roofs of today. Though not as eco-friendly and a flat roof with grass and plants growing on it, we think on Earth Day that most would agree, thinking about longer term roof rating options is a great way to reduce waste and promote a more eco-friendly approach to roofing.
Roof shingle have come a long way in the last few years. Wanting a roof shingle that looks like real wood shakes? Read on.
For a person planning a reroofing project there are lots of variables to decide on. These variables include: size, color, longevity and shape among other variables. While size and color are fairly predictable variables (some home have a black roof, others have gray, tan, etc), the thought of shape isn’t one that is always at the front of a purchaser’s mind. Shape can make a big difference though.
Contained on one of our asphalt roof pages are several roofing material examples. Look how sophisticated some of the shapes are in their overlapping patterns. These patterns can often look like wood shakes, adding additional style and texture to your home’s roof. Durable and appealing, these roofs can be installed for a fraction of the cost of a real wood shake roof.

Saw this article and thought we would share: Roofing contractors are keeping their shingles out of land fills. This is an option that is growing more popular within the industry. Not too many people know this, but roads and roofing shingles often have one big thing in common: they are both made from asphalt.

Spring is a great time to catch up on some routine home maintenance. Each spring homeowners flock to the exterior of their homes to prep for seasonal gardening and to get the yard prepared for BBQs. While you’re prepping for outside, take a few seconds to perform some basic roof inspection points. Some of these tips can help you needing to call a company for a roof leak repair.
- Look at your vents, chimney for signs mold or mildew
- Look for curling shingles (including shrinking roof shingles)
- Look for shingles that are misaligned, or shifting
- Look for damage around flashing too (may require some binoculars)
- Look for branches rubbing against the roof (can lead to advanced aging via friction)
Don’t forget the inside
The outside of your roof can help give signals if you’re at risk to experience a leak. Head on up to the attic for the second part of the inspection. If your roof already is leaking, there are likely going to be signs in the attic. This can include staining on the ceiling. If your ceiling is stained, then the leak has likely been there for awhile. If the floor below it shows some signs of water drops (example if the dust is disburded in that area under the spots), then you have another sign for how large a problem the leak is. Look for signs of wet, or damp insulation as well.
If your roof is showing signs of a leak, don’t hesitate to get a second opinion. Often leaks are fairly inexpensive to fix, especially if you can catch them before they cause damage to other parts of the home.

There have been a lot of hail storms throughout metro area. Kennesaw, GA has been hit hard by hail and as a result many roofs received damage. The damage from the storm typically isn’t going to cause a leak (though wind damage removing shingles could pose a more immediate threat). What will cause damage is the premature aging of the shingle from the hail striking, denting and softening the shingle. You can see signs of damage if you can get close enough to the shingles because there will be little dents presents (or big dents depending on the hail size). If you have gutters, seeing little pieces of roofing material is another sign that damage is present.
This is important because each roof shingle is rated in years. For example, at 30 year roof is expected to last for 30 years. When a roof suffers hail damage the shingles become weaker and therefore cannot last for their expected life. At times, this damage can be so severe that homeowner’s insurance policies can have a claim on them to help repair the damaged roof.
Kennesaw roofing damage from hail has been quite common. If you suspect your roof has been damaged, considering having a review conducted. KTM provides free evaluations and can consult on whether it is best to fix, replace, or do nothing.
