What is a Deck as a Roofing Term?
A deck is a substrate over supportive framing to which roofing material is applied. The average consumer will remember this as what appears to be plywood when you remove all the roof’s layers. While plywood panels can be used, are often are present on older homes, it must be installed with the long axis of the panel perpendicular to the joists. Other composite materials exist today depending on the type of roofing project.
A deck as a roofing term can also be called sheathing.
Why it Matters
Whether you call it decking or sheathing, this is a phrase you may hear when your roof estimate is presented. Decking is important because it provides the base layer structure that shingles will eventually be laid on. If you are replacing your roof it is also important that your sheathing was previously installed correctly and is able to be reused.
